[ File 01 ] — Field notes

We read the war
first-hand.

Behind every front line stand not numbers, but people. Men who wrote by candlelight in rain-soaked notebooks. Mothers who waited for field post that sometimes never came. Trench Diaries gives those voices their stage back.

Every episode draws on real diaries, letters and recorded interviews — from the crater fields of the Western Front, across the frozen Eastern Front, to the jungles of Vietnam. Carefully researched, quietly told, without pathos.

“You only understand a war once you hear how quietly the people inside it spoke.”

[ File 03 ] — Field post, cleared by the censor

What the censor
made disappear.

Every letter from the front crossed a censor's desk. Places, losses, doubts — anything that might unsettle those at home was blacked out. Run your eye across the lines and read what really stood there.

In the field, 14 July 1916

My dearest Martha,

we have lain for eleven days near Fricourt, and the noise never stops. The earth shakes as if it meant to swallow us whole. Yet when the night falls quiet for a moment, I think only of our little garden back home.

Tell the children their father is holding up well. Of half the company we no longer speak. By the time this letter reaches you, I may already be further forward — but do not worry. I will come home, that I promise you.

Yours, Heinrich
